The brief was for a desk top baton, with laser engraved logos and lettering.

The client sent an AI image of their requirement, which was then refined to a finished design, and the item was then made turned and engraved.

The finished baton can be seen in the cover photo and the development photos are in the Mega Gallery.

The photo on the blog post is of a Caulking Hammer, made for the shipwrights working on HMS Discovery in Dundee. A Caulking mallet is used to drive the caulking into the seams on a wooden hull and on timber decks, to prevent leaks.

Tons of re-usable timber are scrapped every day. Some of it can be reclaimed and given a new life as a practical item or just something to look at, when decorating your home.

5 years ago, I was given a piece of mahogany, which had been rescued from Liverpool docks. It was floating close to shore and was put into a dry garage, where it lay for 50 years.

The owner presented it to me, and I made him a fruit bowl as a thank you gift. The picture is shown on this blog post as a good example of what can be made from reclaimed timber.

After turning and sanding the piece, there are several choices for the final finish.

The intended use of the item will guide the choice of finish.

Bowls, platters and other items for food use can be finished in food-safe oil and wax, which is easy to maintain and refresh during use.

Decorative items receive several coats of sanding sealer, followed by abrasive wax and then a gloss or matte wax polish.
